New Here
Hi, I'm Ed, I live in Tucson. Long time professional musician (take a guess..), and recent convert to the knife world. I've always carried something ever since I was a Cub Scout, in fact I joined just so I could get a pocket knife! Well, the uniform looked pretty cool in 4th grade too.
I already had a bunch of knives, nothing too interesting though. I always buy cheapos because I inevitably lose them, or forget that I have them on me when I go through TSA. But recently, I got the knife bug and I'm having a blast learning about the many aspects of the knife world. I'm slowly building a starter collection—and true to form, I'm staying with less expensive knives right now. Until I learn how to sharpen well, I'm sticking with the under $100 category, no point in turning a Benchmade into a butter knife!
So far, I've got a Boker Kalashnikov, an AKC F16, a Bestechman Dundee Sheepfoot, a Frank B 9" stiletto, a Leatherman Free K4, a couple of Shrade Old Timer Stockmans, an old Uncle Henry slip joint... Nothing exciting, but solid representations of some categories. I haven't picked up any fixed blades yet, I'm still on the hunt for a nice old Case or Shrade Congress 4-blade, and I'm also getting into some of the peripheral EDC stuff. It's fun having a new hobby I can get gear-obsessed with. As a long time pro musician and gear reviewer (known as the Bass Whisperer on YT), I've been down the rabbit hole of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) so long, I forgot what it's like NOT to have a giant wish list. But now, that list has shifted to knife stuff... I've got enough instruments!
I look forward to perusing the huge amount of collective wisdom here.

Welcome, bassman520/ Ed! If you have a key word for a subject(s) you're interested in, just type it into the search bar. A couple decades of interesting posts here.

Re: New Here
Thanks all! I've been in huge forums like this for many years in the bass world (as in the musical instrument, not the fish), so I know how to navigate it, (and hopefully how to behave). This seems like the place where every question I have has been answered many times, so I will use the keyword search function!

glad to have with us Ed.
Re: New Here
Welcome Welcome. . .
I notice people will collect a "type" . . or several types . .
after first buying a selection of less expensive same type lower quality items.
Good plan . .
You'll have your "soup of the day' favorite carry. . and your fallback power tool.
You find that one semi-rare older knife, that you'll never use to cut with.
You fascinate of how many people, how many stories, how far it traveled,
where you found it. .
and then you'll have 30 examples of it.
I know guys that collect knives by the Sounds that they make. . .
click therapy . . .

Re: New Here
Please don't attempt to sharpen your Frank B stiletto. They are not made for cutting.
You can never have enough instruments! I have around 35 basses, 4 amps, nice PA, pedals galore (Dunlop likes me!)
My G.A.S. fluctuates between basses, knives, guns, and tools for my shop. Oh yeah- watches. Lots of watches. So I never get tired of one thing.
And cannons... smaller cannons. Probably something else, too.

Re: New Here
Hey Bill, Ed Friedland here. I love Memphis! Played there a few years back with Marcia Ball, and there is NO reason in the world that would ever stop me from hitting Central BBQ!Bill DeShivs wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 5:22 pm Welcome from another bassman from the rectum of the south-Memphis.
About sharpening the stiletto… I seems like this blade was definitely not meant to be sharp, but I also have an AKC F16 OTF with a bayonet blade and it’s very sharp. Well, as wonky as the Frank B is, it does have a nice action, and I’m sure it would pierce very well. For now it’ll do.
