Bill's Italian Revival

Post by JulesVane »

Subtitle: "Back From The Dead". So- I bought a small group of old picklocks, and the seller wanted to throw this in the box for a minimal fee. He showed very few pictures and the knife looked rough, but he made it look a lot better than when it arrived to me. I mean "basket case" doesn't even come close. Thankfully, it cost me very little to take the chance. I didn't even have the knife in my possession for an hour. I took some quick pics., sent them to Bill to get his okay to send it to him. In a box it went and off to the Post Office I brought it. The only thing Bill could assure me of was "It will look better than it does now!" :) The knife did "work" as far as pressing the button to the lock up, but what a mess the knife was! Here's a few of the pics I sent to Bill. "Warning. Viewer discretion is advised." ...

The bolsters were a mess, and no, that "black stuff" wasn't something Flitz on a rag would take care of. It appeared the pivot pin must have either broken off in the center, or just rotted away...

The blade looked like a crumbling wedge of cheese...

Black steel, inside and out, from rust and rot...

The seller did disclose the blade peek, but positioned the knife to minimize it (his photo). Actually, it probably peeked up an inch...

So, that's what Bill had to work with. A complete mess. Naturally, I didn't know what to expect, as the knife was way too far gone. It could never be perfect, and it isn't. But, Bill did indeed live up to "It will look better than it does/did"...So, Thank you for that, Bill! It sure does!

I have no idea how deep Bill had to go into the knife. I do know the blade was off for sanding and laser welding, at least. Heck, with barely any pivot pin left, it was half off when he got it! So, besides the obvious clean up, sanding, laser welding, I'm not sure how much deeper the project went. But, what a difference!

Thanks, Jim. He sure did. I believe he cleaned up the knife just enough to match the best the blade was capable of being. I trust your upcoming project won't be as drastic as this one started off! Stay warm and safe!
