hey you switchblade sellers, if you test your knives, do you worry about fingerprints? My wife brought this up and it set me to thinking
(ouch that hurts)

Only to the extent that if not wiped off they can cause rusting.

The oils in fingerprints contain a high level of salts. That's why everyone
who owns a Gun Shop spends time after they close wiping the guns with
a oiled cloth.
Blood is even worse, it's sure to cause rusting on anything that will rust.

I use a product called Rennsance Wax. It was formulated for use in museums in the UK. You can find it on Ebay or Amazon. You could also wipe the blade clean & dry and wipe it down with a silicon cloth, do this every time you put your fingers on the blade. Vagrant is correct, your fingers have oils that can cause rust.

Ren Wax is good stuff; I use it on the majority of my swords, knives and other steel weapons; anything that has a smooth surface; metal wood horn and ivory.
Check it out.
I've been checking out folders at AAPK and am amazed at how many of the Sellers' pictures show multiple fingerprints.

I swear Ren wax ( and I have the large tub $27.00) is no better than neutral shoe polish.

As someone who has a small collection of antique swords hanging on the walls; I'll tell you, fingerprints are death to steel unless they're wiped off after being touched, especially the old veterans.
I've seen a lot of autos pictured in classifieds and other places since joining this forum that have fingerprints on the blade. Having learned the hard way, I use Ren wax on all of the swords.
