Bonsa leverlock

Post by jim d, »

Here is a Bonsa 11 cm leverlock. The name is derived from Bontgen and Sabin which I understand operated from 1896 - 1982. The company made, among other things, leverlocks with other stamps as well as its own Bonsa stamp. This model is not uncommon but is still a classic, at least in my opinion, with jigged bone handles, steel liners, ns bolsters and the familiar "Springer" bolster stamp. It is in unsharpened, unused condition, sits deep and centered, rock solid lockup, no liner gaps etc. When I acquired it the blade would only open about halfway, but after a WD-40 bath it will jump out of your hand if not tightly held. I consider myself lucky to have found it.

I purchased the knife on ebay in 2008. It had been acquired by an antique coin dealer where it was mixed in with a coin collection he bought at an estate sale. As with all my old knives, I wish I knew its entire story...

Very nice Bonsa, Jim. I'm a Bonsa fan myself and here is a fairly uncommon one with a folding saw included.
Bonsa offered well over a dozen different variations of switchblades, which is impressive.

Thanks for sharing that uncommon one, Neal. Even the more common ones are getting hard to find. I've been looking for a decent examples of normal single blade Hugo Koller, E.D. Wustof, etc. stamped ones for a decade or more.

I have never seen one with the saw blade in person, just photos. Weren't there some made with other stamps or etches as well?

I have a very nice Bonsa with saw and half of a main blade. Someone broke it in half. Blades are hard to find.
I would also suggest buying every decent Hubertus you can find as investments.

Around 3 years ago a missed out on a Bonsa shell puller with saw on eBay due to my phone freezing and was not able to bid. Still mad over it 😡

Thanks, Jim and whippersnapper.
Jim, yes, Bonsa did use several different stamps on their knives.
Enclosed are about half the Bonsa automatics that I have accumulated over time. This group represents the more common variations.
Bill, should you find a blade, the earlier model of the Bonsa lever with a saw blade did not have a nail nick.

Bill, is it true that Hubertus is discontinuing their autos?
