Thanks again for sharing these .

Whats the very bottom one classed as or named ?...ls it still a humpback or another locking type ?.
I have never really come across these humpbacks in my buying or collecting circle then these two appeared. They are real interesting knives.

Thanks for showing the different types Fastr19 and thanks for the explanation Bill.of the differences between coil and leaf types.

The one in the bottom picture is a coil spring knife.
Look at the difference in the "humps." That will always tell you which spring type.
mine has the normal hump just like the coil spring knives but has the leaf spring . the locking pin on the blade is different than the coil fired knives though .

Yes, there are exceptions. My statement was a generalization.

I never liked humpbacks before but I must have only seen newer ones... these are all gorgeous.

I find it odd that neither of the two eBay humpbacks in the original post appear to have a locking pin. What's up with that? I have a leaf spring humpback that looks very much like the smaller of the two, but it has a standard locking pin, as does Wicollector's. Does the absence of a locking pin indicate a coil-sprung knife? Perhaps because a coil doesn't have sufficient opening force to overcome the resistance of the pin? I dislike over-sprung knives, but my early Frank B. coil spring humpback was the wimpiest auto I've ever fired.

The coil spring ones are like that. Instead of the locking pin, the blade has a small notch like on a swinger or lockback. Then the tab has a piece that fits in there.

I never thought about it before but I think you're right about that.

I was offered this humpback recently for $275 but it has a broken spring (believed to be leaf spring). What do you think... too much for an no name stamp?

Something is amiss with that blade. I have never seen one of these with a bayonet blade.

Per the linked topic: "The oldest and original Humpbacks have a bayo blade and the standard lock plate with a pin and hole locking mechanism. They were also leaf fired."

Edit: Looking at the last post in that thread, I see that you've already found it, Bill.

Yes, Corvus, plenty were made with bayo blades - the oldest and originals sure were.

There is that old saying, “don’t always believe what you see on the internet...”. Do your research first and find hard facts from true experts who actually collect the knives in question.

I stand corrected again. Thanks for showing us.
I do own one that the original owner swore he brought to the US when he immigrated from Columbia in 1960.
I understand that memories can be faulty, but I know this gentleman well and I'm sure he knows what he is talking about. I also know that this date contradicts current knowledge, but it is what it is.

I don't claim to be an expert on Italian knives. I just have seen more than most people.

FWIW, I personally consider Bill to be a leading authority on Italian stilettos. I've learned more about these knives from his extremely knowledgeable, pull-no-punches posts on the various forums than from any other source. In fact, Bill's opinions have had a major influence on my entry into Italian knife collecting. I bought my first picklock based on his input.

Thanks, Mr. DeShivs. 8)

Something does look off on the first photo posted. The Rostfrei stamp looks like some on knives I have that were made within the last 10 years.

Yes, it does. That was the first thing that caught my eye. The shape is wrong and it looks drum-polished like modern blades.
Then I realized I didn't recall seeing one with a bayo blade.
