JC Blade Scale Type?

Post by trentu »

So what type of scales was the actual Johnny Cade Shell Puller blade? Where they stag scales, imitation textured dark scales? I have both so tell me what I need to make it as close to the movie scales. Thanks you guys!!!

Best I could do (though I'm sure you've seen it many times). Looks stag to my un-trained eyes.

Dang, it sure does look like stag in that pic. But the actual German puller that is the JC knife has a black jigged bone.

Here is one of the real ones:

The knife in the movie has brown jigged bone handles. Actually, probably white bone with brown dye in the jigging.

So the "real" Johnny Cade knives that pop up every few years not the right one?

Are the scales on the knife in the movie this dyed bone stuff that was often used on Japanese autos?

Anyone can say they have a "real"JC knife.
The fact is, no one can prove it-as there are no pictures of the complete knife.
The pictures that I have seen, show a light bone, stained dark in the jigging.

I thought it looked liked a brown or stag look. Off to find some brown jigged scales!

I believe tbe scales were like a dyed Chocolate brown and caramel aged jigged bone .Its a hard one to pin down exactly as many collectors like myself have found.

There have been many fine examples pass through here of old German shellpullers and of course the fine examples converted by Bill de Shivs ....of which you had a say in the scales to be used.

Heres a few examples i remember from talkblade from a long while back .

The last picture is one of my favourite of the older Cade Blades ,i am not sure if its an earlier pre war example but i love the large wider lever on this knife and the jigged bone scales are what i perceive are similar to those seen on the film knife.

Good luck on your quest.

The scales on the last one are very close, but the lever pictured is a replacement. That knife has been through my shop. I may have replaced that lever with the proper one.
