Comparison Between BM42 Fake and real BM42

Post by cardoso5fr »

A french forumer did a comparison between the fake and the real one. I post that it (i try to translate vaguely) in order to permit to people whose don't have a good knowledge of the balisong worl to avoid to buy a fake at the price of the real BM42. Some dishonnest people have already began to try to sell fake as real......

Packaging is different the copy try to have a "luxuary packaging...."

Not the same completion on the handle

The completion of the latch is different. More angle on the copy.

Image
Under the copy latch, no rounded part....

Image
The completion level is poor on the fake.

Image
The blade is not centered correctly on the copy, the completion is at some parsec of the completion level from benchmade.

The logo is etched differently.

The color are different

The grind is not perfectly symetrical.....

Not the same thickness 1

Same thing 2

Same thing 3

Same thing 4

Dismantled....

The tool

Image
Some washer on the fake have been put away, there was 3-4 more by pivot........ to fullfilled the gap between blade and handle.

The numbers

Faux BM 42 ; Vrai BM 42

Total Lenght : 24cm ; 24.1cm
Handle Thickness : 12.1mm ; 13.2mm
Blade Thickness : 2.8mm ; 3.25mm
Weight : 152grs ; 128grs
Pivot Diameter: 3.95mm soit 5/32" ; 4.75mm soit 3/16"
Pivot Highness : 9.4mm ; 9.5mm
Highness under the head : 8mm ; 8mm
Diam int washer : 4.2mm ; 4.9mm
Diam ext washer : 7.35mm ; 9.15mm.

Material

the fake 42 is all steel, blade and handle, the two are magnetic... (difference with a BM42 SS with have un magnetic handle because the stainless steel is austenitic one ....), the screw are also magnetic.

The real 42 have ti handle. and magnetic screw.

Fake normaly in 440C but nothing to check that information....
The real have 154cm blade and ti handle.

I hope that comparison will avoid to some to be "stoled" by dishonnest people which will sale a fake for the price of the real one.....

verry very helpful information. 8) Looks like there are two big ways to tell if you have a fake BM 42 or not - the fake weighs more than an original and  parts are not interchangeable between an original and a fake.

The fake is thinner, has sharp angles instead of curves, and the tang cups are not rounded.

The fake does look like it has a sharper edge, though.

That may be true, but I'm sure it doesn't hold that edge for nearly as long.

Good point.

I also doubt it is 440C steel.

I would like to know how durable it is against my ceramic tile. All CCCs fail. My 42 and 40 TR are indestructible.

Excellent info. The three strong points for me are the blade grind at the tang, the machined lock on the real one has more of a taper and the blade is thicker on the real one.

I'm sure to a true Bali owner they would know the difference in the overall feel.

Well done Mr. Cardoso 8)

I obtained one by a friend in order to see what it was...

It's a clone of BM42. The latch is one from kimura, the system is rough to begin but become smoother after.
The blade edge is soft, the edge don't hold. it's done to be 440c, but if it's, it's tempered very high....
The completion level is very poor.

That is the channel
Image
There is a big quantity of black strong dust.
The milling work is not clean. The pivot have a lot of play (the edge can hit the side of the channel, the washer are ultra thin and have no use...., they need at least 4 more washer to be efficient)

Some part of the blade aren't un burr....., for example the part which hit the channel center. The angle of the blade back are "sharp" on some part....

The handle is done to be stainless steel, but it's nickel plated.... And the plated seem to be not ultra strong.

The pivot are a bit thin for the pivot hole (not a lot but they dont fit perfectly), and they are a bit "long"

It' flip well, the weight is a bit over a normal 42 (the handle are less thick than a ti 42).

It nothing more than a cheap clone of a bm.... with a kimura latch (and a not bad system for the latch) at the price of a kimura....

I dont know but I think since I dont have the money for a real BM balisong, if I had to get a cheap one I would consider this. Its a good design and the only downside I see Is inferior steel and maybe some cheap pins/screws. Like I said, I dont know, but I dont see why this would be a bad choice for a cheap balisong. opinions?

i realize that. im just sayin, it looks better than most cheap balisongs and if i had to choose between a cheep balisong and a balisong that was engineered to look and feel exactly like the best :)

I don't think the OP was saying you shouldn't buy one of the knock-offs (some of my favorites are clones). The pictorial is for anyone who is planning on buying one of the real ones. He is showing them what to look for so they don't get taken.

As far as clones go, the fake-42 looks pretty decent.
