Nickel Silver vs. Stainless Steel

Post by natcherly »

Is there a way to positively identify NS versus SS bolsters? I have some knives that supposedly have NS bolsters, but they don't exhibit the rich silvery glow I identify with this material. I also have a stiletto that was sold as having SS top bolsters, but they really look like NS. HELP!

Natch
You can try cold blue. It is available at gun shops, Walmart. The bluing should not do too much on stainless, but will quickly color NS black. It should polish off.

Available at any gun shop or Walmart [Permablu sp? is one brand name]. Most "do it yourself" gun blue is cold blue [Unless it has heating instructions it's cold blue].
