good question mr vagrant - all i know is that at least they are uniform (almost) again...
here's the after pics...it's hard to tell, but they are much darker colored now..just a few whitish specs left...

Might be totally wrong, so don't try this without testing it, but could you wrap it in talcum powder to draw off the oil? Maybe keep brushing the oiled powder off until it can't draw any?

welcome to the forum larry!

actually i thought of that - so i tried super absorbant paper towel..
same thing you do to bacon kind of thing...but not a single molecule came out...
the last pics are of the scales after they "finished" sucking up all the oil they could...
it's the wierdest thing...
