Post by missaman »

Its my understanding Celluloid scales "self destruct" and take their neighbors with them....
Why...
How do I avoid this???
Thanks Missaman

Not sure. I do know it takes many years. I'll try to research it.

Exploit the incindiary and possible explosive qualities  Remove the scales, find a way to powder [or file them] them, and save the powder [or filings] for pyrotechnical purposes

Hello Missaman,
This self destruct and acid leeching process is a nightmare. I never would have thought it possible. Mighty sad to think of all those great old knives rotting away and nothing to be done. Hope you and your family are well.

I can say that there are thousands of old celluloid scales that have NOT deteriorated, nor are showing any signs of it. I would think knives that are viewed frequently would stand little chance of breaking up. My theory is that sunlight and heat have a lot to do with it.

What about modern celluloid, is it the same material? I have a few recent knives -- primarily Case (but also a few of the supposedly NOS Shapleighs that Charles Parker was selling). Are these at risk as well?

The modern celluloid is the same composition as the old. Actually, few knives go though this, and it takes 50+ years.
