Re: Another day in the shop
About 9-10 inches open.
My guess is 1870-1880 era.

Re: Another day in the shop
What a terrific piece. Question, why is the rear bolster split like that? Seems that a solid one would be more durable.

And…are the scales ivory

Re: Another day in the shop
The scales are ivory. I don't know why the rear bolsters are separate- that's just the way they made them.

Re: Another day in the shop
Really cool. I'd like to know the history.
Re: Another day in the shop
Wow - that is a true museum piece, it must be interesting to work on some of the classic knives. Given that they are so uncommon, do you ever wonder what you will find when you get them?

Nothing surprises me anymore. I see more really rare stuff in a month than most people see in years.
I'm blessed.

Re: Another day in the shop
Is the safety button worn or do you believe it was that small when new?
It's a beautiful knife, no doubt. I love seeing the old stuff and am always impressed with the quality of the way things used to be. CNC has stolen so much art from the things they make and replicate.

Re: Another day in the shop
There is no button on the Sheffield knives, as a rule. They use a small steel extension exactly as you see here.
