Shur Snap Restore

Post by RobbP »

Tried my hand at a restore of a Shur Snap. The knife as it was had no kick spring, had rust and corrosion, and the blade tip was roughly reshaped.

After dismantling, I found the liner tab that holds the kick spring had broken off. I cleaned everything up. Hone stoned the blade to try lessen the grinding marks, made a new spring, pinned the spring in place and reassembled. Not a collectors piece but I gave it new life to keep living as a vintage American Switchblade from the 1950's.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks

Awesome!
What did you use to make the new spring?

Its actually old replacement window (coil) spring material. I have a lot of it!

I heat it -flatten it, clean it, shape it then temper and anneal it.

It comes out to really close to the original spring size. It could be a bit thicker but in my opinion the original springs could have been thicker too!

The coil spring is what I used, the little spring is a broken original.

Nice job!
It's too bad the plastic scales always shrink so bad on the old card knives.

Hi RobbP,
Thanks for your reply. It sounds easy.

Nice work! I know a lot of people don't like old knives being cleaned but I really love cleaning the gunk of the safeties on those.

And if you, or anyone, is ever planning on making new spring for those, I can show you some great stuff to use that is pretty much ready to use (you just have to file it down a little and put the bend it in).

Do you think that Colonial would be interested in reintroducing the "Shursnap" line? It would likely sell very well.

Colonial is not interested in the Shursnap line. I have spoken with the owner about it.

That's a doggone shame. These little knives were/are what the Great American Pocket Automatic Knife was all about. :(
