Unusual Pick Lock Mechanism?

Post by skirmish »

I picked up a parts knife , at a gun show several years ago. The locking pin appears to be a flat ended rectangle, unlike any lock pin I’ve ever seen. It’s similar to the old sure snap knives. I don’t have the blade that came with the knife. Any idea who made this? Thanks, Joel

It's not a pick lock. It's a button open/close mechanism.

The long sear on those Italian bo/cs is a pretty clever design. It allows the part of the sear that is holding the blade closed to be farther away from the pivot. It's not much farther down but that little distance makes huge difference. The closer the sear is to the pivot, the more force you need to overcome when you push the button. Actually, even these slot bo/cs can sometimes require two hands to fire them when they get older and stuff starts to warp. This is why there are no really big bo/cs.

Also, if you consider the geometry, when the sear is closer to the pivot, when things get worn down, it causes much more peek at the other end.

An even better bo/c design is the two-sear rocker. That allows it to have the sear holding it closed much lower. I think the biggest production bo/c was a small run of 13"s that had two-sear rockers.

Actually, the best bo/c is a lever as that allows it to have a really strong spring holding the sear down.

Joe,
What is the length from the top of the upper bolster to the bottom of the lower bolster?
I may have a blade for you.
