Flaking?

Post by picklocksrock »

My brand new Walt Latama blonde horn started to bubble and crack/flake near outside of button? Any suggestions Bill. I’ve never seen this happen before.

I can disassemble the knife stabilize the scale where it's moving/cracking, and open the hole a little.
Or - you can leave it alone.

Hi Bill,
I can see from the photo where the button rubs the top of the button hole which is causing the horn to split and separate. The damage horn may not get any worse, but I agree filling the button hole will stop any additional damage. How would you stabilize the horn? Super glue?

Yep- super glue. Maybe thin the horn from the bottom if the button is pushing it up.

I had the same problem with my Coricama and the horn above the button was paper thick so when I tried fixing it it just came off like a finger nail, I used superglue mixed with a colour match of the horn and sanded through the grades.

I’m glad bill said he uses super glue and that it’s ok.

Cheers

Bill

Does horn have to be dried properly like wood or do they use it straight away ?

Horn should be dried like wood.
Regardless-like wood- it can lose/absorb moisture and can warp, shrink, or move.

Bill

Ah thought so, is that why sometimes the blade isn’t in line with the scales liners etc because of movement in the horn ?

Sometimes, but that is usually caused by blade pivot holes not being drilled straight.
