AGA 13" Batwing Problem

Post by texans123 »

Hi Bill -

I have a 2011 AGA Campolin 13" Batwing that opened and locked up tight for many moons. Recently, the knife will often fire and lockup correctly, then other times it hangs up and doesn't fully open and lock up. I have tried WD40, gun oil, grease etc. Recently tried grease after reading another post on the forum and thought that did the trick, but the problem has started again. So, wanted to get your opinion and/or the opinion of others here. Was thinking maybe a bit of trimming with a Dremel or file, but didn't want to try this without consulting with you experts first. Here is a pic of the knife for general reference, and if you need specific pics let me know and I'll try to get them.

Cheers -
Jeff

Look in the blade well at the spring. It will be rubbing on one of the liners. put a little drop of oil where it rubs.

Thanks Bill. Tried that and it improved the issue some. When I move the blade manually heading to the locked position, I did notice it gets very tight at the spot shown in the photo here. It's a strange one, knife will fire and lock up fine say 4 to 5 times in a row, then it will hang a time or two and then fire and lock up good. :?

Try sliding a razor blade in between the liner and the blade at the pivot pin. Use only one razor blade.

Tighten the finger guards. If they get loose, this happens.

If you can take out (and replace) the top bolster pin and the two bottom bolster pins there are a few simple things you can do to make those ones fire much better.

Could scale warping contribute to this?

Whole threads have been devoted to that issue, although the most conspicuous and notorious one of those dealt with imitation horn....

It's almost always loose guards.
They flop, and prevent opening.

Bill -
Makes sense to me as they both have some movement when in the locked position. Can see the movement here on the back guard, and the front guard also has movement but not as much. I'm not sure exactly how to tighten them, using the single guard pin.
Cheers -

Open the knife to a 45 degree angle. Peen each side with a very small hammer and light taps.
Peen first side-test
peen second side- test
repeat as necessary
Do not bend the guards.
