I don't do many "mangles" anymore, but when I do, I try to make them different.

Bill, I really like that 11 1/2" in dark horn. Why don't you produce them like your smaller, 8"? I would love to own one.

Thom,
The big Leverletto looks good on paper, but it's huge in hand. It feels like one of the 15" stilettos.

That one wasn't originally done that way.
The ones that were, had a nickel silver pin, finished flush with the outside of the guard.
I was mistaken, but thank you for showing another example of my shop work.

Can we see pictures of all these others you have worked on that have a pin going through the guards?

To be clear, you’re saying the Italian stilettos made between the late 1800s and about 1947 had a nickel silver pin between the guards for 2 reasons: to stop the backspring from over opening and also for ham handed Americans so they don’t push the backspring too far?

I just don’t want any confusion here. There once was a collector who liked to say “no information is better than wrong information.” So I just want there to be no confusion here.

Are you confusing them with those 1960s Argentina stilettos? Those had a pin in them.

To be clear- I don't take pictures of most of my work. But thank you for posting another picture of one of my repairs.

My job is not that of a researcher. I'm a cutler. I see literally thousands of knives. I'm not cataloging them.
I'm saying that I have seen Italian stilettos made with a pin through the top guards. I believe they were flat guards, but I don't remember.

Now- you're on thin ice here, so be very careful. It has been peaceful for the last couple of weeks.

I didn’t post another picture of your work. The Argentina knife you didn’t restore, BTW, it was done by a collector who wanted to give it a shot to see how easy or hard it was. It was his first ever attempt and the results must be amazing if you thought it was your work.

Not one person I talked to nor myself have seen Italians stilettos made with a pin through the guard for the reasons you mentioned or at all.

And several collectors are pissed you posted pictures of their knives without permission.

I’m here to be nice but if people post really wrong info it’s going to get questioned

By saying Italian stilettos were made that way really
completely changes the history of the construction of these knives. Sure would be great to have some documentarian of this or some pictures or even first hand knowledge. This changes everything...

Sometimes I get strange requests.
This gentleman wanted all the blades removed from an Italian lobster pattern knife, except the cuticle cutter.
I came up with a better idea, and made a new handle/spring for the cuticle cutter.

Here's a fully forged Italian stiletto.
Liners, bolsters, and pivot all forged from one piece of stainless.
Blade, button, backspring, and kickspring are all stainless, too.
The coil spring under the button is original to the knife.
