Grandpas old Schrade auto

Post by JayAK80 »

I’ll post some pics below...

The spring is broken, and overall the knife is in rough shape. The blade looks to be badly over-sharpened and reshaped. However it was my late grandfathers and I’d love to see it refurbished. My fear is that it would basically be someone throwing the knife away and replacing every single part, this is not what I would want. I want it to be as original as possible. At least one scale will have to be replaced. Could this be refurbished while keeping mostly original parts? I know it’s not likely “worth it” from a financial perspective, I’m not asking from a collectors standpoint either, but it has sentimental value and I’d love to see it brought back to life.

Am I crazy, should I just display it as is?

Thanks,

Jay

The spring can be replaced fairly easily (just get that middle pin out). And the rest can be cleaned...if you wanted to do that. You might want to consider just doing the minimum to get it working and leave it in the condition it is in now.

The button side handle needs to be broken off of the knife immediately! It can't be cleaned.
It is celluloid and it is deteriorating. It can ruin the knife in a matter of days. Deteriorating celluloid puts off extremely corrosive nitric acid fumes.
When you break the handle off, be careful not to lose the safety

Good to know! The brown side has been like that for at least three years, I hope it’s not too late!

It also has some blade play in all directions, could this be fixed potentially as well?

Everything on it can be fixed.
Understand- these have to have a little play to operate properly.

Unless you have a matching front scale, both should be replaced.
If you HAD a matching front scale- it would still be celluloid.

I’ve found some similar looking acrylic pen blanks I’m having sent to me. If the color is good I’ll have Jeremy use them in the fix. I’m hopeful that they are a decent match. Also, I agree both should be replaced.

What size is that? Is it the same length as the 3-3/8" double bladed? If it is I may have some original scales from a donor knife.

Or I should say I may have a button side scale in that color...being a double blade it has button and safety holes on both sides.

Very cool knives you have there. I’m not sure if they are the same size as mine or not... however, I’ve ordered some blanks that I’m hoping are a good match.
