First Attempt at Peening Pins

Post by Jeffinn »

This is my first attempt at peening knife scale pins. The heads aren't as round as I would have liked but for my first attempt they're not too bad. A special thanks to Jim Brown257 for giving me this manual stiletto to practice with!
I'll keep working at it until I'm happy with the results.

They look flush to the scale, way I like them. Good job.

Hi Jeffinn,
Good job! Nice first try. Your first attempt looks better than mine.
Try this:
Cut your brass pin a little bit longer than needed
File the cut ends flat and round
You'll need a two ounce or lighter peenball hammers
With the flat side gently hammer the edges of the pin continue going around the edge and occasionally hammer the top of the pin
Repeat until the pin head is the right size and in the shape of a circle
Buffet it to the desired luster
Make sure the liner pin hole is beveled
Insert it into the scale and through the liner
Put duct tape over the polished pin head
File the protruding pin from the liner nearly flush with the liner
With the round end of your hammer flat the pin
If it's too tall you'll need to file the hump smooth and make it flush with the liner
Good luck,
John

Looks pretty good. You might be leaving too long an end on the pin before peening. The pin should fit perfectly in the hole. Then it only takes a few taps to put a sufficient head on it.

Thanks everyone!
I watched a video last night of Mr. DeShivs peening some pins. He was doing domed pins, the technique seemed the same but there were a few extra steps to get the "domes". When I used to make jewelry we used a cup burr to give the ring prongs a nice rounded look. That same principle, maybe the tools were a bit different.
I've removed the pins and am in the process of re-doing them. I found that cutting the pins shorter and filing them before peening seems to help a lot with keeping them round. Working on flush mounted pins for now, will get to the domed ones at a later date.
I appreciate all the feedback.
Jeff.

Okay, so I tried again with shorter pins and they came out much rounder:
