Knife wont stay closed sometimes
Bill
Got this little stag transitional but it keeps jumping out when closed.
There is no blade peak and it fires like a rocket, the best ive had.
When closing the blade fires out alone sometimes.
Is this the sear pin and is there anything I can do to prevent it without major surgery.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Knife wont stay closed sometimes
The sear pin might be worn down. It may need to be replaced. Does this knife have a modern button assembly or does it have a vintage style D stamped liner and rocket type button?

Thanks for answering
its a D stamped ,full nickel, thick liners ,fully lined top and bottom bolsters, transitional, marked Rostfrei in slanted script.
It stays in sometimes ,and pressing the button a few times slightly helps it.
It sits really deep on the handle and locks up well,it may need cleaning but ill bet your right, and it needs replacing....
Heres some pics,of it closed.

Make sure the sear hole in the blade is totally cleaned out.
Often, these holes become filled with polishing compound-which keeps the sear from seating.
Also, make sure you push the blade FULLY closed, so the sear can seat deeply.

Re: Knife wont stay closed sometimes
Thanks Bill
Ive flushed the hole and got a pin in to clean it.Still hit and miss but of pushed in fully it does hold.
This is the risk in ebay buying ,which due to restrictions,im forced to do.
Im afraid many ebayers are vague in their description of these knives ,its usually just" good working order,"add a foreign language and no return policy ,and you have the English collectors way.
Ive another stuck in customs at present, and not much to do but wait.
Its putting me off collecting at present(well slightly;-)).
Fishtail ,its a swivel bolster release, looks like a picklock on some of the photos.

Hello Ian,
It's possible that the rocker arm/pivot pin are just fine. What could be going on is a loose rocker arm. The brackets that holdthe rock arm in place may have been compromised in someway. The previous owner could have pushed the blade deep down into the channel causing the brackets to twist resulting in a loose wiggly rock arm. If the arm isn't firm it could cause problems with the knife staying closed and opening on its own. If this is the case the only way to repair it is to remove the scale. Which requires disassembling the knife so that it will scissors open at the pivot pin.
Bill what do you think can a loose rock around be part of the problem?
I'm going to look for a photo or two to help illustrate what my hypothesis is for your issue.

Re: Knife wont stay closed sometimes
Thanks John really good of you.
It's staying shut for now,the hole had a few bits of grit in it.This over time could have worn down the pin.
It's a shame as its not in terrible condition,it may be worth taking apart at a later date to check on the pin and rocker arm assembly to make sure its okay.
I'd like a look at pictures for reference John.

Re: Knife wont stay closed sometimes
There could be many things wrong.
I suggested these as non-invasive ways to overcome the problem, as knife repair is not available to Gravknife.

Bill
Its working well enough for now with the advice you gave.
Ill be attempting repairs in the future, but the cleaning showed tiny bits of silver in the hole, and dried grease/oil.
Once cleaned it held better but after x amount of years the pin will be worn.
Thanks both of you for helping out.
