Blade stuck out a lot when closed

Post by gravknife »

Bill trying to work out the cause of massive blade peak, and why the blade won't fire all the way only partially,
Which spring needs attention in this scenario, the blade locks up tight with no play but the blade cannot be fully depressed because of the kickspring.
I think its the kickspring but can the back spring cause this,it seems solid.
Forgive my lack of knowledge,I just don't know the cause.
Thanks in advance Bill.

Usually, blade peek is caused by a worn or undersized pivot pin- or a worn sear.
If the springs are keeping the knife from closing fully there has to be room for both springs.
Without further information, that's all I can tell you.

Bill, the blade will push into the knife with a click, but leaves the blade stuck out at least an inch.
The backspring is out about 2mm when the blade is like this (locked)
The lever pin seems to be fitting correctly, however the lever is a bit wobbly.
.When you push the blade to try and make it close fully there is bounce from firing spring, and the backspring moves further out,is this a weak backspring, or sprung backspring.
I was confused as there is no backspring movement when the blade locks.
Any more information needed Bill, this is the best I can describe it, sorry.

Can you post photos? I think that would help Bill and everyone else understand what's going on and how to solve this problem. I'm a visual person it's easier for me to see what's going on with photos. Along with your written explanation.

There are two problems-
It appears that the kickspring may have "walked" out of it's slot in the backspring- much like the Hubertus knives do. See if you can tap it back. Closing the knife with the spring in this position can break the backspring. It is also possible that someone has bent the kickspring to give the knife more "kick."
The second problem is much worse. The sear is badly worn.

What's involved replacing a sear Bill, is it a professional job, or are there no sears.
The knife flicked open, taking these shots.
Sorry for being so much trouble.

No trouble. I like to help.
Repairing/replacing the sear assembly is a professional job. The parts would have to be made.
Try holding the knife closed and simultaneously pushing the lever (in the down or locked position) down hard to see if the sear will seat better. Let me know what happens.

It seats better Bill, it feels tighter, and the lever doesn't wobble as much.Thank you.
I'll look after this old knife until it can be repaired by a professional.
I'm going to stop buying everything that flicks in future. But on this occasion it was a five knife collection and I knew this was in need of something.
I've realised I can get these knives and don't need to panic buy.
Maybe a new one next time I have money. :)

If that's the case, try this:
Do the same thing, but when holding the knife fully closed, tap the lever (in the closed, locked position) with a small hammer. Don't hit it hard, or you can make things worse. What we are trying to accomplish is re-seating the sear.

Hello Ian,
Bill is a pro when it comes to knife repair. I would try his suggestions and it just might take care of the problem. You'll need a really a small/light weight hammer or something similar. Something very light like hammer found in a child's tool box set. A hammer weighing 1 to 2 ounces is all you need. You can always improvise my first thought is an all metal butter knife. You could use the handle to gently tap the knife.
Give it a try.
John

Thanks Bill and John.
I couldn't try last night, the wife moaning at the messing with knives.
I tapped it with a bronze head small hammer, it seats better, but it's spring retention is lacking. It snaps into place better though.
Thanks for taking the time you two.
