ShurSnap repair

Post by Bill DeShivs »

Most customers won't spend the money to do a major overhaul on the cheaper American knives. This customer did.
The knife needed new handles, sear work, and a little clean up.

Like what you did around the button and lock, very nice.

I never realized the scales went from pin to pin like that. So when they shrink over time do they break loose at the pin hole?

Yes, they often do break at the pin holes.
The scales are exactly like the originals, but since they are shiny black, they photograph differently.

Colonial has an old 4 1/2" saber blade Shur-Snap that had been sitting in their basement since 1950. They are asking $250.00 + shipping for the piece. Well worth the asking price.

I ADORE that saber blade! If it holds a decent edge, such a prize would make fro an excellent EDC piece. 8) While inexpensive, some of those early American made (particularly Colonial) autos were particularly useful "gentleman's" pocket knives.

Perhaps we could get the Interstate Commerce 'ban' overturned and get the twin blade pocket auto knives (manufactured with either AUS 8 or ATS 34 steel) returned to the market. These were a true personal item of a genteel "man about town."

Welcome ddogg! Looks like you have a bowtie Shur snap made by the Colonial knife co. probably in the mid 50's. Not particularly rare or valuable unless you can find them in mint shape without the handle shrinkage. Yours is in pretty good condition and probably worth under $100.

A couple I just happened to have out today...

Bill,
NICE! were the original scales bakelite? What is the material you replaced it with, and will that shrink over time?

Original scales are some form of later plastic, not Bakelite.
The replacements are acrylic, which should not shrink.
