Guns and Renaissance wax

Post by jim d, »

Bill,

Slightly off-topic question here but I know you are also a gun aficionado. I read where Renaissance wax offers good protection for both the wood and blued steel of guns. Before I embark on a potentially risky project, I want to know you thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Renaissance wax is meant to be used on items that are not handled often-like in a museum. Consequently, it doesn't wear well. It does go on easily.
I have had much better luck with Kiwi neutral paste shoe polish. Any good paste wax will work well, too.
And it's ALL cheaper than Renaissance Wax.

Bill,

Thanks, I actually have some Kiwi neutral paste shoe polish. Is it appropriate for both wood and blued steel?

Just a curious question about wax on the blueing.

Are you guys NOT firing these guns and only want to preserve the finish?

When I go shooting, my metal is SMOKIN'
.

and I would think any kind of wax would just burn and discolor the blue?

Does car wax discolor your paint in hot sunlight?

Sunlight doesn't make the metal sizzle and glow red.

I ...USE.. my guns and I just can't see putting a wax on the blueing.

Now, don't get me wrong, if you have closet queen guns, I think it would be worth looking into, But....REALLY...WAX on blueing

I shoot my guns but I don't "make the metal sizzle and glow red" I'm more of a make every shot count shooter than a spray and pray shooter. Plus, shooting .22's doesn't heat the barrel as quickly as shooting larger rounds.

I heard that when the barrel gets that hot, best stop and take a leak to cool it down.

Or...REWAX the barrel
:o :o :o

I've had the front handguard smoking before...Now what I do with these AK's are extreme..though a lot of people would consider it normal.

Really, even 250 rounds through a .357 magnum in going to bake your wax right onto the metal.

Correct me if I'm wrong..Please.... I'll even meet you at the range with a pistol and a can of wax....We'll try the wax on Bill's gun first :) :D

Bill....What do you think of that?

No need. People have been waxing guns for decades. Sorry you haven't heard about it.
Oil, grease, wax, or anything else will burn off of red hot metal-it won't bake on.
I don't shoot much anymore, but there was a time that I shot almost daily. I also repaired and customized guns, had an FFL for about 25 years, refinish guns, hand engrave them. I know a little bit about them.

Bill, I also had a FFL for years before the 922r shut me down in 1998. I'll have to give this debate to you, because, I have no experience with wax on the metal of a hot gun. I'd still like to meet you at the range and watch you shoot your waxed gun :) I'd never wax mine....Just My Opinion :D No disrespect intended in any of my statements.

I have seen photos of Bill's engraving on various guns and it is MOST impressive.
