Re-scaling my swing guard

Post by storebought »

I have dismantled my 11" Frank B swing with the intention of replacing the liners and bolsters (with nickel silver), the scales (with black and red layered micarta) and the button (with I don't know what yet.)

A few questions:

Can I silver solder the hole in the blade where the swing guard attached, and polish it such that it is reasonably undetectable?

Will silver solder join pewter and ss? (thinking about a pewter skull button.) Or would epoxy be better suited for this?

Thanks for any input.

I would chamfer the hole and pin it.
Silver solder (even the 4 % low temp stuff) requires too much heat for pewter. Soldering pewter even with lead solder is tricky.

Thank you Bill.

How about soldering sterling silver to ss?

Silver/SS is possible with a clean joint, good flux and low temperature silver solder.

here is my weekend's work. I like the skull button, and the multi colored micarta is cool; should finish up nicely.

nice work 8) .should finish really nicely. Thanks for the pics I have thought of stripping a knife myself for a similar project and to try and figure out how the button works.......I'm also curious to know how the button on a buck conversion is fitted ,and how it works as well :?

Hello gents. I have mock pinned the knife and it looks pretty good. However, there is unacceptible blade wobble. When I pinch the bolster at the pivot pin, it does no good. Should I install some brass spacers? Or will it tighten up when I peen the pivot pin?

Help!

If the holes are straight it should snug up with no problem.
