Greetings, Legion Of Fan-
Herein to follow, is another excerpt from the hysterical archives, this episode is entitled- "It's A Race"
This adventure was told to me by a fellow foreman of the SF roofing company we worked at. There He Was, one fine day circa early 1980's, happily driving his hot truck down Lincoln Ave., next to the Golden Gate Park. The machine he was piloting was a cab over model, with an 18ft. bed full of roofing materials and gear. They were towing the typically smoking hot 350 gal. kettle. Now then, these were the days when the kettle tongue was tied to the truck with a hardened 1" bolt with a nut on the lower threads for securement, prior to the advent of a trailer pin with the little folding wing on it's end.
Anyways, some exciting drama ensued whence, imagine his surprise to see, in his rearview mirror, the kettle was coming up alongside the truck, evidently unfettered fromst towing pin! It was still somewhat bound to the truck by it's rubber propane feed line, which was instrumental in it's not motoring off by itself. It's a race! Of course, in his reflexive braking gesture, the kettle slammed into the side of the truck cab, and the kettle belched forth a spray of 500 degree hot tar painting the side of the cab, but also splooshed into the interior, speckling the dash, windshield, and the arm of mine buddy, which was met with the traditional roofer's cry of- "Ow,Ow,Ow!"
Later forensic investigation determined that the towing pin nut was either not properly en-threaded enough, or had wiggled loose in transist.
Policy for better nut tightening was enacted therein.
Just shows to go ya', even a somewhat happy day can be thwarted by an unauthorized hot tar surprise!
AS ever,
Your ol' pal,
