THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OFFICERS & NCO'S

Post by ILikeStilettos »

A young Army officer was severely wounded in the head by a grenade, but the only visible, permanent injury was that both of his ears were amputated. Since his remaining hearing was adequate, he was allowed to stay in the Army. Many years later he even rose to the rank of Major General. He was, however, very sensitive about his appearance. One day the General was interviewing three servicemen who were candidates for his headquarters staff.

The first was a Captain, a tactical helicopter pilot, and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview the General asked him, "Do you notice anything different about me?"

The young officer answered, "Why, yes, General, I couldn't help but notice that you have no ears."

The general was displeased with his lack of tact and threw him out.

The second was with a Navy Lieutenant, and he was even better. The General then asked him the same question, "Do you notice anything different about me?"

He replied sheepishly, "Well, General, you have no ears." The General also threw him out.

The third interview was with an old Sergeant Major, an Infantryman and staff-trained NCO. He was smart, articulate, fit, looked sharp, and seemed to know more than the two officers combined. The General liked this guy, and went ahead with the same question, "Do you notice anything different about me?"

To his surprise the Sergeant Major said, "Yes, General, you wear contact lenses."

The General was very impressed and thought, "What an incredibly observant NCO, and he didn't mention my appearance." He asked, "Sergeant Major, how do you know I wear contacts?"

“Well, General," the soldier replied, "It's pretty hard to wear glasses with no fuckin' ears.”

I started laughing just before I read the punchline because I saw it coming. Excellent joke!

I don't know why it double posted. I can recall only one other person having this problem and that was Bill D.

Good one Dave.
I spent the first half of my Army career enlisted and the second half as a Warrant Officer so I can appreciate both aspects.

That is truly the funniest joke I have heard in many years. Thing about this one is you can actually visualize the scene as you read it.

A face like this comes to mind when I think of the Sergeant Major-

I don't know Marine ranks, but I believe that's a gunnery sergeant, aka Gunny, rather than Sergeant Major. Both would be E-8's.

Even better, it would more likely be a gunny than a Sergeant Major to make that comment.

However- The man in the photo is: John R. Massaro, 8th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps "Oorah!"

The time I spent in the Navy was taking care of J52-P-408 Pratt and Whitney engines on Grumman-built EA6B "Prowlers". There wasn't any time to worry about the brass.
