Karl Malden, dead at 97.

Karl Malden is gone. A career spanning over 50 years. From Tennesee Williams' "Cat on a hot tin roof" and "Babydoll", to "A Streeetcar Named Desire" as well as "On the Waterfront", then to ABC's TV's "The Streets of San Francisco" (a Quinn Martin production) and as Omar Bradley in the motion picture "Patton".

Another great character actor has passed into history.

I agree, we will miss him. I am a great fan of "character actors," folks with unusual looks and styles who don't mind if they age on screen.

My first real taste of Mr. Malden's acting skills when I saw the movie "How The West Was Won" in 1960 when I was at the tender age of ten years old. He depicted a religious eastern farmer down on his luck making his way west for a better life. In one scene he portrays a controlled rage, and either he was a better actor than most, or drew upon some hidden demon. I saw my Dad crack one time just like that, but Mr. Malden scared the chocolate chips out of me, and I remember that moment to this day.

I think Eli Wallach used a switchblade to cut open a screen door in that film.
