Now THAT'S a gun!
Picture of the USS New Jersey firing a 21-gun salute, 9 16"/50 caliber Mark 7 main guns in three triple turrets and 12 5"/38 caliber Mark 12 guns in 6 twin gun turrets. Quite an honor to walk the decks of this ship a couple of years ago. Those main guns are impressive, to say the least...[

Re: Now THAT'S a gun!
Greetings, mr. sammy da blade-
Unlikely we could afford even a scale model big gun on our home for the very nervous allowances...
A long time ago- There I Was, on mine 6th grade field 'trip', to USS Massachusettes (BB-59), when I was lithely able to squirm into a partially open main gun turret hatch, and of course I began touching anything I could, which resulted in the center bore depressing in elevation, somewhat instantly noticed by tour personnel. My classmates gave me the applause/Bronx cheer I usually got for mine antics AS I was escorted to sit in the bus in the parking lot for tour duration.
AS ever,
Your ol' pal,

Better have the ear plugs in deep when that fires off. Wally, ever notice how some people have no sense of humor?

I'd like to see the projectile that fires, probably the size of a small car.

Such power... wouldn't like to be a ship on the receiving end of a salvo from that .
Was always in awe of the Yamato 's fiirepower and German warships of WW2 aswell .
Mr Corpse good job you didn't find the fire button on that ship ....would have been he'll of a story though .

Re: Now THAT'S a gun!
The Bismark class sported 15" guns while US and several British battleships of that time carried 16"ers.
Then there's the Yamato class with their 18.1" main battery. Sounds impressive, but to really be so you need to hit something. The IJN did not have good fire control radar while US ships had excellent systems. So the Yamato's had an advantage in throw weight, while the US had accuracy on their side.

See what you mean Natch.
Had a quick search and saw the Bismarck only sank the "Hood "thought it did more as its a well known ship in ww2 .
Remember seeing pictures of the Yamato it was a monster ,but as you say no good without a good target system .
The Americans put paid to the IJN at midway ,they awoke a sleeping giant by attacking Pearl Harbour and paid a heavy toll.
Hope your well mate good to see you post .

Greetings, Mr. Natcherly-
Of course there was no live load in tourism turrets, had there been a Fire! button eye almost certainly would have push button same.
Side note: the Steven Segal movie- "Under Siege" showed a nice view of 16" gun projectile and powder propellant bag charges.
it's rumored that the surviving members of the 6th grade 'trip' still snicker at mine caught in the act results.
Mine Sainted Dad described being under a salvo from a WWII cruiser's 10" guns, AS seen in a WJC post- "Smoke Rings".
I used to play the MB board game- "Battleship" with the young corpse kids, using the setting of 'Salvo'- wherein one had 5 shots per turn.I used to flummox the little rascal by placing my big ships adjacent to each other, and the lowest number of holed vessels on corners.
Eventually they figured me out, and we went next to 'Stratego'..I was ever clever in mine 'Spy' location..
If naye else, playing games with the kids may have helped them understand reality into the future, and I miss those times.

Re: Now THAT'S a gun!
The price of ammo is too high for me to get one of those...on second thought, I have some bad neighbors about 8 miles from here...but no I will have to pass. That thing probably would float in my creek anyway.
