My new Sunfish!!!

Post by sonnyboy »

Yes, it's a brand-spanking-new Marbles Sunfish/Elephant's Toenail, NIB!!! With zipper case!!! :D

Won on eBay, over stiff bidding opposition, and finally in my grasp!!!

Image

Look at those sleek classic lines...that slender, yet graceful blade, the exquisite scales...the polished bolsters, the proud escutcheon...

I'm told that the Sunfish was originally designed to cut rope...

What more fitting task for such a brave little knife!!! :)

Good evening Sonnyboy,
Beautiful knife you have there, You did well! Have you ever heard that the style of nail nick on that blade is for strike anywhere matches? Don't know if its true, but thats what I've heard.

Be seeing you,
Sam H.

As Sam said that's a match striker pull, don't know if that's the intended use but it works, although it's getting harder to find strike anywhere matches anymore, most I see are strike on box safety type.

Match striker, huh??? That's funny! :D

Here's a better pic from the eBay page -

Image

And it had the description - Jigged Stag bone handle scales w/ threaded nickel silver bolsters

Anybody know what that means??? I sure don't...

I've always liked the long slim fruit knives, thought I'd look for one or two on eBay, then saw this, and had to have it!!! Open a drawer full of Maniago's and this, and guess which one gets the attention???

Edit: Found a great site on Elephant Toenails... http://elephanttoenails.com/index.html

Regardless of the nail nick, which is called a match striker pull that is one good looking knife, as in all Sunfish or Elephant toenails, they make a commanding presence. And on yours the stag is really nice!

It is, isn't it??? Kind of pinkish... :D

If I'm reading that linked page right, it's actually bone which has been "jigged" to look like stag...no??? :? I'm guessing that "jigging" is some kind of scooping-carving, with a special tool probably...

But what is a threaded bolster???

I was taught a knife thing just now. I thought "elephant toenails was
some kind of odd website you were into" Those knives are cool. How
hard are they to come by? I gotta get me some of those.

No...

Probably pretty common...I don't know if Marbles is still in business or not, but I think they outsourced these...

That site says if you can find one good Toenail for $1000, it's a better deal than two fair ones for the same price...

I have no idea what a threaded bolster is, I do know that bone can look like stag when they jig it and then torch the bone.

Ah, so that's how it is done...maybe the "threaded" refers to the one line on the bolsters??? :?

I guess so, anythings possible, I've never heard that term used on a knife before.
