Scrawny Monkey

Post by ILikeStilettos »

The picture is a dual action automatic from the Vallottons and called a "Chunky Monkey".

Image

Inspired by this unique grind I narrowed the width and created a 12" picklock swing guard with a bottomless fishtail design. I guess you could call mine a Scrawny Monkey. The extra pin near the top of the swings (about 2-3/8" from extreme to extreme, centered on the handle) keeps them from scissoring. They should have very little movement in the open and deployed position.

Image

The thought process was to create a nice heavy blade that could be hollow ground on the bottom and fully sharpened. I drew this based on 3/16" stock and 1/16" stainless liners. It has plenty of kicker to be a fast knife. It uses a heavy 5/32" pivot and 3/32" scale pins throughout. Only the mid pin is 1/16". I was able to place this almost on center so that there should be little opportunity for scales warping and twisting the liners.

Image

Using a trick stolen from the Russian Prison Knives, the swings collapse partially into the handle.

Image

I drew it with a hexagonal lock tab and a big 1/8" pin.

Image

For those who appreciate this sort of thing, here's the open view showing the internals. It has a dovetailed kicker with a large ball on the end. This protects the sharpened edge when the knife is closed and compensates for the set-back ricasso from the original design.

Image

It's no small knife, but it closes up quite neatly. Only the liners are cut away to make room for the swings, the bolster and scales are full perimeter. The unusual pin positions at the front of the knife compensate for this.

Image

My old monitor failed and the new one is a 29" ultra-wide. This made for lots of distortion in my CAD program and motivated me to find a way of correcting the scale. The screen captures are now 100% accurate. The angled view should fit on a standard 8-1/2" X 11" sheet of paper in landscape orientation at 100%. I find that printing these out gives me a much more realistic feel for the design than merely viewing it on screen.

I heard somewhere that Facebook was having problems with gun and knife stuff on the site. Tried Facebook years ago and I just didn't dig it.

Facebook has really become a great source of switchblade info and knives for sale... I have gotten some great deals and seen some ridiculous prices too.. Dave has a group called Artistic Switchblade Knives and I think it's one of the better groups there.. Also Mark Erickson has a good group called Old Switchblade Knives. These and a few others are about the only reason I use Facebook anymore..
