Hello,
A good friend of mine got this cool, very rustic looking "Bowie" knife from his brother-in-law. It looks pretty good considering it is from the 1970's! Has anyone ever seen one like it? Tang stamp reads "90 IDEAL PAKISTAN". My friend wants to give it to his son one day, so it would be great to know its "pedigree"!
Thanks!
George

Re: Pakistani Bowie Knife?
Back in the 70s to 80s there was a mass influx of these cheap knives in different patterns. There were many copies of the Buck 100 in different sizes. You could literally break them with your hands into two pieces.....The metal is soft and does not hold an edge. Not trying to knock it, but unless there was attachment to it as a personal item of someone close, it is just not a good knife.....

The hole by the tang is unusual, wonder why it's there.

Pakistan is a well known location for ship breakers / scrappers. I'll wager that everything in that knife including the teak wood handle was once part of a long-gone steamship.

"Reduce, reuse, recycle!" Those ship breaker/knife makers were decades ahead of us!
That's a cool fact, I'll have to tell my friend!

Oh yes, one other fun fact I forgot to mention, friend's brother-in-law was in the Army and said he carried this in Vietnam! Clearly the U.S. military does not issue knives stamped "Made in Pakistan"! But would the Army allow soldiers to BYOK? (Bring Your Own Knife) It seems like that would open a whole can of worms... Bring Your Own Gun, Bring Your Own Ammo.... Could this be a, umm, "Tall Tale"?
