Latama 13"

Post by texans123 »

Hi Gents -

I saw mention of a Latama on SD recently, so I pulled this one out to share. The 3rd auto I bought when I started collecting way back when. The owner of a local gun shop had this one big in a display case and it was not for sale, I tried several times. Then a year or so later I noticed I had new neighbors and one day was chatting with the lady when her husband came out. Turned out he was the owner of that local gun shop and had closed the shop and retired. Next time I saw him I mentioned that old big knife and asked him if he still had it. He said he did, and this time he said he might sell it. A few days later he told me he would sell it and quoted me a very nice price.

Has a bug bite or two on the back scale, could be a small chip, and the blade is down a little and peaks when closed, and is missing the safety button. But the knife is overall a beauty and the color of the scales are great. A big, thick and heavy knife. Best thing is it still fires with authority and kicks like a mad jack ass. I sent a few photos to Ragtime Red years back, and he stated the Latama stamp in the rectangle was the least seen of the various stampings they used.

Wow...you have something very special here!

With that rare stanmp, along with the color of the scales and the 33cm size...you have a very valuable knife.

This one belongs in a museum....definitely a keeper.

Thanks for sharing! :D

Thank you sir. The knife itself has an interesting history. The man I bought it from acquired the knife from a friend who was a State Trooper officer. The officer was called to a truck stop where a truck driver was wacked out on 'speed' and causing problems. The officer tried to apprehend the guy and the guy made the very bad decision to pull this knife out and attack the officer. We all can figure out what happened next. The officer kept that knife and then later gave it to the gun shop owner to put in the display case. They were gun collecting friends.

Love those scales. Never seen anything quite like it. Your persistence definitely paid off!

Great story to go with a great knife. You're one lucky guy to have the stars align like they did.

Thanks guys. Must admit that when I bought the knife I did not know the difference between a Latama and any other maker. Then, I did some reading online and eventually bought the "Switchblades of Italy" book. I just liked It as it was big, old and popped very hard.

Thanks again guys. Panzerfaust, when you have time do post your 11" example. Rock-in-Roll, I did some searches here and it looks like your yellow horn 8" landed with fellow collector Redeye, he has cornered the Latama market and for good reason! :D :o
