En-Lance-d Renzo Beltrame Ivory
My very good friend, John "Alajohn" Blanz, whom many of you know from the SD auction, was kind enough to drop ship this 13" Renzo Beltrame (Made In Italy) imitation ivory bayonet to another close friend, Lance. Lance, as you may also know, is a tattoo artist. I asked him if he had ever tried his hand at scrimshaw. He replied that he hadn't, but was eager to give it a go. I suggested a "Crypt Keeper" theme and he began to work up some sketches. It pretty soon became apparent that even the relatively soft acrylic ate up his tattoo needles, so he had to do it by hand with a scribe. The proportions of the knife also didn't readily lend themselves to my theme, so I relented and just told Lance to do what felt right to him. This was smart on my end, because it gave free reign to the genius on his end, and I think the results are flat amazing.
The reverse side of the knife is more like traditional scrimshaw and the theme we started out with. It's pretty darned cool, but Lance still had his hands a bit tied.
However, on the front side, he really knocked it out of the park.
The front scale is a seamless blend of scrimshaw and bas relief. It's a bit difficult to visually absorb at one go. I noticed the DEEP holes he had made up toward the pivot. Then it hit me; it's a three dimensional skull, with the button AND a huge snake emerging from one of the eye holes. The design even wraps around the edge of the scale toward the spine. When you follow the snake, he drifts between flat and more 3-D with the eye of the snake looking at you and the tongue flicking the lower scale pin. I'm at a loss for words by now.
This really seems to bring the back scale into thematic focus. What would you expect to find in the Keeper's Crypt but a huge snake, spider webs and the denizen, himself, holding a candle-powered lantern?
The knife was rather mundane at the start, with the off-white scales having neither variation or grain. It seemed logical to suggest a dark theme, as so many tattoos have and which would hopefully be right up Lance's alley. Lance is the kind of sweet soul that worried about pleasing me and asked if I wanted approval pictures or to just be surprised. I went with surprised, but it came out more like overjoyed.
I hope you like this as much as I do. Lance, buddy, it's a keeper! (pun intended)

Congrats to Lance. Really creative work.
Good job just letting him have free reign on the design. Letting him work without jumping into the mix was the right idea.

Lovely knife as usual Dave
I love scrimshaw work but to have a personal design on a knife like this is just cool .
Great idea Dave and wonderful work Lance.

Wow! That's amazing! I'd love to understand the procedure...I get the part about using a scribe, but how does one "scratch" into imitation ivory and get the artwork dark? Hey, 'ya never know. I might want to get a scribe and try my hand at scratching a stick figure into one of my own...lol. Beautifully done Lance! A great piece Dave!
