Pat certainly must rank with the all time masters of the cutler's art anywhere in the world. We are lucky to have such a consummate craftsman working in our favorite medium, the automatic knife!

I have you to thank in part Bill; after buying one of your swing guards, you introduced me to Pat at the 2016 Blade show. You both make some truly amazing knives and I sincerely thank you!

Wonderful creations both .
Dave has some great Picklock Pats ,but this one sticks in the memory.for obvious reasons.

I remember the "Fat Tony "when I first joined and was browsing 8) .
It's one of a kind and would Grace any knife collection as its centrepiece.
Beautiful work and a monster .Would love to see it fired.. :)

That is a truly magnificent piece of art.
You can see the attention to detail and that hornet nest damascus and the scales just fit so right together.
Stunning knife that will be awed at long after we are all in switchblade heaven.
Pat is a true master at these ,and I really love that swedge blade shape ,I wouldn't change a thing.

Thanks for posting it.
All the best

My pleasure. Strangely enough, perhaps sacrilege, it's an EDC in rotation with a James Bros Cheyenne I customized with mammoth tooth scales. I told Pat when we designed it that despite its value, I like to carry and use my knives. Perhaps not the smartest thing considering the cost of ivory and Mike Norris steel, I can't stop fiddling with it and it is the object of envy for many of my friends. One friend questioned my choice of scales and my response was that it essentially guarantees I'll never (and cant) part with it. :)

tommyw68 wrote:Yes, his work is amazing and he is a truly nice fellow. Just had this one made for me...12" long, with Mike Norris Hornet's Nest stainless Damascus on the blade, button and safety. Locks up like safe and kicks hard. The scales are something really special to look at and feel in the hand - a sandwich of tusk and horn.
Great knife, Tommy68! You're stayed with the traditional button and fan shapes but thrown in that stunning and very distinct Damascus. I can only say, "Bravo". Pat remains at the top of his form and continues to set the high bar for builders. Love the scales.

One question, though, what's the blade thickness?

It's 3/16" thick. I was considering 1/4" but I would have had to go with a 13" or larger which is just a bit to big to really carry - for me., plus the steel gets very expensive. I had to get an 8" bar for this blade. So... 11's always seem a bit to dainty in my hand but 13's and 15s feel like short swords, so I went with 12. It has the heft of a 13 but is just more manageable. One inch really makes a difference- it still opens lightning fast and hard but has the weight of a larger piece. I'm actually surprised that this size isn't more common.

I think you made a wise decision. My 1/4" was a naive attempt to go "over the top" and it is just that. The tension of the kicker against the mechanism all but locks it in place and it takes huge pressure on the button to fire it. If you like, give me a holler on the phone some time and I will present some cost effective alternatives for the Damascus. On a separate issue, i have an interesting 12" knife in progress for the very reasons you mention. Send me your email address and I will share that with you. PLP is still the master, but your knife reflects a ton of intelligence and logic. Any builder needs a clear idea of where the buyer wants to go and ultimate success hinges on good direction. Without a doubt, you were more effective than I.

thwright@teamsiegel.com.

Feel free to reach out to me anytime. For what it's worth, It takes quite a bit of pressure to fire mine as well but it's unavoidable due to the physics of the square button release and the friction created between the blade and the lock due to the heavy leaf spring. A more traditional Italian uses a lever beneath the scales and has a slight mechanical advantage in the release mechanism vs. the square button.
