Mojorising, how do you get the close ups without distorting?

Believe it or not all the (good) fotos are taken by my attitudenous son with a cheap $150 Olympus Brio digital set to the highest quality and w/ the close up button pushed. Bighair is seriously anal and keeps tweaking and fussing till he has it right. But no special lights or other do-dads. Just ghetto level fotos.
