11" Ghost

Post by muskrat man »

I am guilty of buying a couple of the 11" stiletto kits Roger posted in the Classifieds  . This is the first one I have built. Briar filework, Ivory micarta handles with an appropriately beveled black micarta diamond firing button. Didn't bother putting on the rear bolsters or any bolsters for that matter, spring was too strong to pick the tab so I took it back apart and cut the handles down and put the front bolsters on. Man these things are fun to build!

Sweet. Love the look. Very cool.
Had the same problem with the tab being to hard with my first stiletto project with Nemo.
His solution was to file the back spring a bit at a time, until it was easy to pick.
May not be the right way, but has worked for me when converting swivel release to picklock.

Both cutting down the inside of the backspring, and beveling the edges of the locktab are usually necessary to make a picklock out of a modern knife.

That is most beautiful in a lot of ways for sure! I really like how it looks, real pleasing to the eye. Great job!
What I noticed is that, the hardest thing to do with these stilettos when building them, is incorporating the safety in the scale. Having to make that very thin slot, and not make it too wide or too long. It's a real pain in the butt. Putting a fancy little tab for a button on it, made out of nickel silver or something, shaped a little different then just round. Your fingers can't hold such a little tab, and to file it down to shape it is quit hard to do very well to make a nice safety button. Never mind all the time it takes just for a safety. When just leaving it out is so much easier. And besides, who carries these things anyway! Just put them on a shelf to look at-um, right?
I wouldn't mind putting it on my shelf.
If I only knew!
