Spotlight can probably add to this.
There are two purposes.
1 - it sounds sooo cool 8)
2 - it provides addittional locking if the primary lock failed

Image Image Image Image Al and Teddy are spot on!I hope the photos help you understand the workings.Added advantage of a loud racheting knife is the fear it evokes.Somthing like the sound of a pump action shotgun lets you know when it's time to leave! Cheers the spotlight kid. 8)

That type of lock, called "chiusura a scrocco" in Italy. is sometimes seen on traditional Italian stilleto folders, They are still made for collectors by artisans.

Hey Spotlight, i've been looking for one of these racheting knifes, but the pics are not coming through. Can you post a link of model. Thanks.

I found this on worldknives. Description on site.

Image

The 907 E is a big knife measuring 5 1/2" closed, 9 1/4" open and having a blade length of 4 1/8." It has a unique locking mechanism reminiscent of the traditional clasp knife with a pull ring release. It also rachets open in several positions so it won't snap closed on your hand.

The Okapi is only really secure on the final two ratchet stops the rest just sound cool but don't really lock it. An interesting knife to have in the collection but no need to have an entire collection of them.

The ratchet locks the blade in place. They also sound cool when they lock.
