s30v knife steel- has anybody tried it?
i bought a buck knife with s30v steel and it had 2 shiney spots on the blade when i took it out of the box. i took a fine stone and cleaned the blade up. i cut up 2 deer hams for jerky on a plastic cutting board and the same 2 spots on the blade came back, the rest of the blade remained sharp. under magnification it looks like very fine chipping. has anybody had this problem?

2 Microtechs and a Lone Wolf Valloton D/A have performed great. All have about 11 degree per side angle and haven't suffered any metal/edge problems. I use the Lone Wolf pretty hard too.

Hog, 11 degrees? Are you sure????? That is awfully steep.hogwild wrote:2 Microtechs and a Lone Wolf Valloton D/A have performed great. All have about 11 degree per side angle and haven't suffered any metal/edge problems. I use the Lone Wolf pretty hard too.

No doubt the 11 degree per side is correct. I realize this is a very acute angle and wouldn't advise it for a chopper but for everyday use it works well for me. I have had that angle for a couple years with no problem at all. It doesn't work for many steels but has not been a problem on these knives; so far. I also refine the edge to a very polished 0.5 micron surface. Try it you may be surprised.

On most knives I go about 20-22. Pushing the envelope occasionally surprises me. The thin edges seem to cut better/longer if the edge will hold up as it has done with the s30v knives mentioned.

Once again bearing the banner of the eternal noob I request your tolerance of yet another ignorant question: How does one determine the degreedness of the blade? Must some type of sharpening system be employed? I have a hunch all my blades have weird angles since I have no way measure, maintain, or set such.

vanagas, many sharpening kits come with an angle "guide" to help keep the sharpening angle consistant.heres a smiths brand i have ,the rods connect to the stones and the angled end of the rod goes threw your chosen angle slot.
Re: s30v knife steel- has anybody tried it?
I forgot to mention I also use a bench stone and to maintain an angle I simply cut a shim from a piece of wood at the angle I want to sharpen my knives at.

Looks like I'm going to be spending some money. I would be proud to own one of those marvelous contraptions.
On the other hand the wedge method seems mos frugal. If'n I can figure out how to employ said wedgie.

Hey Ed, this system allows angles between 15 and 27 degrees, and you don't have to use wood shims to get your angles right!
