What are the key characteristics and features to look for when identifying a particular type of knife, and how can one distinguish between similar types of knives

I don't think that general question can be adequately answered here. You will need a general pocketknife book that pictures all the different patterns.
There are also sub-divisions of those paterns, and knives that fit no pattern at all.
If you post a picture, we probably can get you headed in the right direction with particular knives.
