renzo pascotto proto 13" swinger PLZ reread
In case anyone is interested, here is a link to 2 RP proto's. I rather someone from TalkBlade buy them.
Also, Beware, I called about the knives. They are 3mm thick blades, not 5mm. I understand the Proto's are usually thinner blades??? Not sure why, you would think the Proto's would be built with as thick as the production knives.

Let me know if you purchase.

The thickness of the prototypes is a good question thom. I also wonder why these are written prototipo in Italian rather than the prototypes I've seen written in English. I gather these were never meant to leave Italy and the English written ones were bound for the U.S.? Makes complete sense for them to be written in Italian. Also, the prototypes (and limited editions) I'm familiar with are usually 1 of _ or 3 of _, where these are just 1 and 3. Very interesting.

They usually have high grade horn too. Maybe the others have already been sold??

Am I missing in the ad the year of the prototype or how many were made? These were the prototypes for the 13" A.G.A. Campolin swinguards? I'm not actually aware of when they went into production.thom wrote:They usually have high grade horn too. Maybe the others have already been sold??

Renzo Pascotto made these knives and marked them with his stamp. Others he made for AGA Campolin were marked with their stamp. In some cases, AGA actually assembled knives based on Renzo's design and supplied parts. In other cases AGA built knives based on Renzo's design obtaining parts from various suppliers, including Renzo P. Sounds complicated? It is a bit but not unusual given the "cottage industry" model in use over there.
Bottom line is that these may not be true prototypes in the sense that they were made to test out a design and obtain approval from the customer, in this case AGA Campolin. Part of the deal is that Renzo got to keep and sell a portion of the knives he made, the rest went to AGA with their mark on them. So these would most likely be production knives that were Renzo's share of the run. They were hand selected and would tend to have better looking scales that the rest of the production. Maybe better fit and finish too.

I agree with you, but why 3mm blades on the so called Proto, and 5mm on production?????
Re: renzo pascotto proto 13" swinger PLZ reread
...Certainly seems a strange area of the blade to add 1 or 3 Prototipo

I know very little about prototypes and difference between proto and production, other than they are a new design and first ones made. It also seems they are not necessarily better than production knives. One thing I have noticed is the Proto's usually have superior scales.

I put a caliper to my 13" Renzo P. swinger. It isn't 3mm or 5mm! Just a skosh over 4mm. A couple marked AGA Campolin share that blade thikness. How's that for making things difficult for us?thom wrote:I agree with you, but why 3mm blades on the so called Proto, and 5mm on production?????

I had the place that has it measure it several times. Neither of us believed it was 3mm

I purchased the rosewood for less than they were asking. It should be here by the end of the week. Supposedly this was part of Gary Shaw’s personal collection. I was told that the blade is unsharpened. I’m not sure of any other details. I’ll post some pictures when it arrives.
