Lebanon? Dagger....is it valuable?

Post by ColdEthyl »

This was in my father's collection. Can't find many with sheath online...also this one is pretty big. Thanks for any info. In a couple of the pix there appears to be a wonky wing - it's the sheath on the counter in the background. This dagger (?) is perfect except for one little missing red dot filling on one side.

Looks like a tourist knife. I have one or two, but not marked "Lebanon". No great value but kinda cute. I'll try to dig one of mine out and post pix.

That is a dagger made by S & A Haddad in Jezzine, Lebanon, before the Haddad family started marking their blades with a tree logo and family name. If you do a Google search for "Haddad Jezzine cutlery" you'll see several examples of their work, mostly eating utensils. They specialize in tourist knives and other utensils with bird (Phoenix) handles.

Originally they were known as S & A Haddad (Said and Alfred), but today they are known as S & S Haddad, or simply Haddad Cutlery. Link to their website- https://www.haddadcutlery.com

The daggers are harder to find than the rest of their items.

A few examples, not my knives.

An older version.

And a current version.

Here are two knives with similar profiles. The larger one, really a short sword, was given to me by my brother who got it in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 20 or so years ago. (During that trip, he was treated to the stoning of a woman for adulatory half a block from his hotel.) The strap is designed to go around the waist, but I haven't see 30" in years. The blade is sharp and could remove a limb, maybe a head....

The shorter one looks like it could be middle eastern, but no. Was made almost 4000 miles away, up north, in Finland.

I have one more tourist knife but will need to look for it in another location.

Another tourist knife, purchased by parents in Beirut, Lebanon about 60 years ago. At that time it was known as the Paris of the Middle East, very secular and cosmopolitan. Not so much these days.

Scabbard is solid brass. No markings on blade.

The last dagger you have there is Syrian.
Also, what's your definition of 'valuable' ?
