Dagger or mini-sword?
Gulraiz created this master 'monsterpiece' for me in D2 steel and camel bone. He had created an earlier one in satin finish 440C with a stacked leather handle. I requested that he make mine in mirror polish with a handle from another of his creations. I love the way this turned out.
22.2 oz (637 g) of pure terror, 18-5/16" (46,5 cm) long with 12-1/4" (31,1 cm) of .210" (5,33 mm) thick blade and as sharp as it looks. It's surprisingly light and nimble in the hand and just slightly blade heavy. This is the same blade profile and cross-guard from the earlier knife and I didn't change a thing.
It came with a great sheath with a pocket for a sharpening stone. You could even carry this beast on your belt, maybe during the zombie apocalypse.
He built up the handle from a sweet piece of green-gray camel bone, red camel and thick and thin NS spacers. I just told him to make it pretty, and he surely did. By taking thicker spacers and deeply filing them, then stacking and polishing, he created a lovely piece of art.
I think the flat pommel that gently flares is just superb.
Thanks for having a look, Gentlemen.

And that would send you away for a long, long time. If you get two people close enough you could probably do a 'double'.sammy the blade wrote:Great wall hanger, to pretty to stab anyone with it.
Thanks, Sam, good thing you and I are peace lovin' guys, right?

That's about the length of an original Smatchet. I think that it is beautiful. It's a "wall hanger" but it is nice.

Thats a great looking dagger.
Deadly blade and really good looking.
Love the camel bone spacers and handle ,plus its a fair old size .
First class workmanship again.
I used to follow an American maker called Bill Moran ,he made old world stillettos and daggers like this in the 60s and 70s and ill have to find some photos for you.
Speak to you soon

Creative treatment of the file work. It draws the eye nicely to the rest of the creation. Well done.

Thanks, Mister C. It was kind of off my radar, like I need another wall hanger, but that grind just grabbed me and wouldn't let go.DonC wrote:Creative treatment of the file work. It draws the eye nicely to the rest of the creation. Well done.

Re: Dagger or mini-sword?
Oh, Ian, if you only knew. I grew up in Ellicott City, Maryland and Bill Moran lived in Frederick. When I was about 10 (1958) I had one of his brochures and I was a fan, but as a kid, I couldn't afford to buy anything. My dad, a blacksmith, ordered a 2" by 12" slab of chrome vanadium steel for the crazy price of like $10 (a bunch in those days) and drew the outline of a dagger on it in soap stone. That was as far as the project ever got.gravknife wrote:Dave

In 1974, I was instructing Masonic catechism and spent my lunches helping a coworker who was near retirement, Bill Fielder. Bill F. lived in Frederick and was a great friend of Bill M. - even hollow ground some files into daggers, rifled his own black powder guns, etc. I still have a dagger he made for me as a parting gift when I left that job.
Fast forward to 2016 and Duke and I become friends. He mentions two of the superstars of the fixed blade world, R. W. Wilson and Bill Moran. I don't think he ever met Bill, but was imminently familiar with his work. Wilson is still living and talks with Duke on the phone. He exhibits at the major knife shows. So I never met Bill Moran, but I sure have been a lifelong fan as well.
Best regards and looking forward to the conversation.
