"What is stag?", asks the newbie.

Post by DaveB »

I've seen it in pics, but never close up, or in person. Is it smooth or rough? What the hell is it? Bone? Horn? Pros or Cons, likes or dislikes?

Thanks!!
- DaveB.

Stag is Deer Antler [usually, although Elk, Moose, Caribou etc. would also be "Stag"].
Most common is Sambar Stag from India.
Pros are many
Cons are limited to a possibility of chipping/cracking but this is not common IF it is properly cured and attatched.

Mr. DaveB,

Stag is generally rough and dark, with the appearance of tree bark. This "bark" is sometimes partially or completely "shaved" smooth, giving it the appearance of bone...

DaveB,

Stag can be either smooth or rough. It's natural and beautiful. It's an excellent handle material but not for everyone or every purpose. My favorite thing about it is that it is always warm to the touch :) .

I've always wanted a stag Leverletto, just like the one Jagman ran over with his lawnmower. That brings my list up to about #123 or so.

Stag is my favorite scale material by far. The stag on that fish that whippersnapper posted is beautiful! I've read that nice stag is getting tough to find. Is that the case?

India has repeatedly "changed it's mindless" on this and reversed themselves. I believe that currently they do NOT export.
The REASON is strange
The locals start grass/brush - fires to find the shed Stag. These fires get out of hand [duh] and burn more than intended so if they can't sell the Stag they won't start fires [hopefully] :?
