Identifying & Pricing My Father’s Collection

Post by Rfturner0114 »

My father passed a few years ago and he still had a modest knife collection he started in my teens (probably late 90s is when most of these are purchased). I would love to determine a value and ultimately sell them. I was curious if this would be a good place to get help identifying them and determine a general value so I don’t get ripped off. I know nothing about knives and very few have any packaging that would help to identify them. If so, is the best way to just post pics of all angles of the knife and anything that may be engraved on them?

I was also curious if the Buy & Sell section here would be my best route to sell them or is something like a gun show or eBay my best bet? If it is on here, I noticed that a minimum of 20 non sell posts are required before posting in buy sell. If I posted individual post asking for help identifying the various knives, would that qualify for that requirement.

If I violated any rules or etiquette here please let me know. Just trying to get a fair price for a collection I no longer want to keep.

welcome to Talk Blade, sorry for the loss of your Father, try to talk pix of every knife, front and back, on the front of almost every knife at the bottom of the blade is what is called a tang stamp, this will say who made the knife, and yes you must have 20 non sale posts to do this, looking forward to see what you have.

There are a lot of helpful folks on here that will help with identifying and valuing your knives if they come on here and see them. If you're really not interested in knives and being part of the community, building trust, etc., then maybe a Facebook group might be more for you. If you are, however, you'll enjoy getting to know folks on here and learning stuff while your time and post count builds to the requirements. Welcome aboard

Welcome to the forum Rfturner.

My advice would be to first take and post some group shots of the knives so we can get an idea of what you have. Many times I've seen people in situations like yours where they inherit large collections and it turns out the knives just weren't worth selling, or not worth much at all. Group shots first so we can tell if it's worth going through the effort to take individual close-up pics.

Also, you would have to pay to sell knives at a gun show or on ebay. And if any of the knives are switchblades, ebay doesn't allow them on their site. Likewise, a gun show might have similar restrictions depending on local knife laws.

Need to have 25 post's if you want to sell here. You could post some pictures and you might get some offers. Good luck!

Thanks for the input everyone. Seems you’ve built an awesome community here. I believe tomorrow evening I’ll start with a few group shots and see if the group can start pointing me in the right direction of where the overall collection stands. Obviously as a teenager I thought these were really cool as my dad was purchasing them, I think it would be some great nostalgia to talk through what I actually have with the group. From there I’ll move forward with what might actually be worth selling. If they’re more effort to sell than they’re actually worth, I would definitely just keep them as a reminder of my dad. I’ll post some pics tomorrow evening.

Rturner you may find that you want to keep some and sell others. I personally have a mixture of valuable and cheap knives. Some I just think are cool designs but aren't worth much of anything.

Sorry for the delay guys. I really appreciate all the positivity you’ve shown. Was a bit tricky getting my iPhone pics down to the proper size, but hopefully this is a good start. I may have lost a few of the pics in the conversion process but just let me know what you would like to see more pictures of. I look forward to hearing what you think.

Well I know a few of them are worth multiple hundreds of dollars each. Someone else could probably give better values, but the Paragon and Microtech Halo III are pretty pricey and if the one is a Buck ( looks a little smaller than a 110 so I don't know what model it might be) I don't think they go for as much as the other two I mentioned but still worth better than a C note I think. Like I said other guys on here will give you a better idea and those are the only ones I recognize so there are probably others in the bunch that are worth something. Nice looking group! Thanks for sharing!

There are a few Daltons that are also valuable.

The the blue marble one looks to be a Protech godson

The wood handled one appears to be a converted Buck 112.

The mother of pearl inlade ones I'm brain farting on as well as the smaller knife on the top right

That Godson is a really nice looking knife.
I've been trying for some time to find a left handed one for my Wife with no success so far.

Thanks for the quick feedback guys. Not disappointed with what you’re telling me so far. I’ll take some closer pics, particularly the blade inscriptions, on the ones you’ve mentioned so far just so anyone else who wants to give feedback will have a little more detail.

I believe the ones with the mother of pearl inlays are Hibben. I am also pretty sure the one referenced as a pro tech is indeed in a pro tech box. I’ll confirm and post more pics tomorrow. I really appreciate the input it’s been a great experience on this forum already.
