Beware- that material is celluloid. If you buy the knife, count on replacing the handles.

I messaged the seller he claims to have installed the scales himself which is questionable as it's too nice a job.

Hearandgone- Your knife's handles are outgassing.
They should be removed as soon as possible. They will literally eat the knife from inside.

Bill, I am trying to see the gassing but I am not sure what to look for.

Look at the rear handle. There are cracks forming. This is the start of the outgassing.
The bolster tarnish, extreme tarnish on the brass pins and the rusty lever pin are also indicators.

Question...it may sound silly but if you spray paint the handle with a layer of transparent poly-urethane finish, will that stop the outgassing?

No, it won't stop it. The reaction is in the celluloid.
