Knife review: Hubertus (Otter) 11 cm. stag

Post by jim d, »

Executive summary: I’m impressed
The knife is free from any of the usual leverlock concerns; it couldn’t sit any deeper, appears perfectly centered when closed, no liner gap, solid lockup. A few things I noted:
Otter has moved to the two-piece spring
      It arrived extremely clean
        The liners are stainless
The mirror polished finish is the best I have seen on a leverlock
Overall fit and finish is as good as any I have seen on a leverlock
Obviously it is a sample of one and I can’t say how representative it is of the total population of Otter made Hubies.
            Here it is

Impressive! I the stag looks great and the bolsters shine with a mirror finish. Awesome addition to your collection.

            Great looking knife Jim

Quality looks like the leverlocks of old ,stag is great ,really nice to see this in a newer knife .
Also a bonus that it has a slip in spring for later down the line if you want a user knife.

            Thanks for posting it .

Actually, the liners are nickel silver.
I think they are doing a good job on these.

Thanks for the clarification on the liners, now I wonder how many of my other knives have n/s liners that I assumed are s/s. Reminds me of the old adage about the word assume...

Nice and I agree with your review. I have one just like yours and also the small and medium sizes. I think my medium one is a transitional because although it has a slip in spring, it's not firmly in place like the others and has been sliding forward. Overall, the fit and finish of the Otters is better than many of the original production Hubertus lever-locks. I just wish Otter would make one with a carbon steel blade or any steel besides the Krupp stainless they use which is similar to 420.

Thanks for the review. I have been tempted since they went to the replaceable spring design. One of the scale materials is called Ebony. The part number used is HZ which in the past was for Rosewood. What is ebony?

Ebony is dark wood. I think the term has been used as a general term for more than one species, and I think they are tropical. At least one species is protected.

Tom - I bought mine through "Bob"s Cutlery" on AAPK. It was a great experience and I would not hesitate to buy from him again.
