I'm guessing we've all had, or have, that one switchblade we saw briefly in a movie, and it stuck with us, perhaps never knowing anything about it. This is mine.
I saw a mafia movie many years ago (turns out it was 1999), and there was an OTF in it that really struck me. It wasn't like one of the cheap ones from the 80's, it looked like a nice one, and big for an OTF.
I quickly forgot the name of the movie, and the cast, I only saw it once. But I've always remembered the knife, even though it was only on screen for a few seconds. I never saw it again, the movie or a knife like it. And there are so many mafia movies I never bothered looking for it.
Then yesterday, over two decades later, I was online researching a different switchblade, and by chance I stumbled into some obscure forum where someone mentioned an OTF in a mafia movie called "The Youngest Don". I wondered if that could be it, so I Google that title, but no such movie exists. However I found a movie called "The Youngest Godfather", with Edward James Olmos, and that triggered my memory. So today I watched it on Youtube, and it was THE movie (knife at the end of part 2). So finally, after all these years, I saw the knife again. Ain't the internet great.
Below is the best picture I could take. I doubt that it's a prop made for the movie because it's a low-budget movie, and they could have just as easily used any knife for the scene, or no knife at all. For about a millisecond there is a glimpse of what appears to be a silver button or slide switch right under the bolster (I think a slide switch). And for another millisecond, right before it's used to stab the Boss (Olmos), there is what appears to be a charging handle at the butt end of the knife (a horizontal bar with two pins in it), but I can't be sure.
Since the movie is from 1999 I doubt it's a cheap Chinese knife. I'd appreciate any info anyone might have on this knife. I've finally found the movie, now I'd like to identify the knife.
Can anyone identify this movie OTF

Interesting one...No clue!
Re: Can anyone identify this movie OTF
Very cool find. . . .I've not seen this model. . . .not seen the movie.
I might obsess with this for awhile. . .looks wicked. . .
But, I would not rule out a custom movie prop.
Sometimes a great "Bad Guy" is built around a single prop.
Several Movies have knives that seem to have NO production knives on the market.
Laura Croft's Tomb Raider Movie knife is Unique. . .and is not the production knife.
Cheech and Chong's character Prince Habib in "Things are tough all over"
The sleeve knives from the bad guy in Bruce Willis' " Hudson Hawk "
in the X-Files there was a special alien killing OTF Spike.
And. . the stiletto from "Eye of the Needle"
just to mention a few.

the closest I have is a couple of MANGLED OTF Combs.

Building something would not be that much of a stretch on a budget . . . .
I was welding up steel bolsters on kit knives, to make them look different.
and sanding the waist to mimic a wasp profile, and filing the blade bevel end angles.

and making a giant OTF is not that hard. . .I mangled a "Silk Ripper" mechanism to make a Gravity knife for Halloween.

I just checked it out. It does seem like a legit auto, not a gravity knife or retractable prop knife. You can see it here at 19:06

Interesting stuff Jerry. I like the looks of that "wasp" waist stiletto with the upswept guards.
Thanks for posting the link Jim.
What looks to me like a charging/pull handle appears exactly at 1:09:13 in the upper right hand corner of the screen. It looks like a black bar with two silver pins. My guess would be that it's mounted on one side of a rear bolster. If it is what I think it is. You have to be quick on the "pause button" to catch it.
The blade reminds me of Paul Panak's OTF's. But I assume it's too early for one of his knives.
Heck, even if the knife is never identified I'm happy just to see it again.
