Re: Toolbox Latama
My friend knew , the guy that sold it to him thought it was broke cause he couldn’t close it
Re: Toolbox Latama
It makes me feel good to know that it's been saved and is now in the hands of someone who will appreciate and care for it. I can only wonder how long it's been banging around in that tool box. How lucky it is that someone didn't use it to pry open a paint can or similar cringe-worthy act thinking it was just a broken/junk knife.
And the blade looks to be in great shape. No one put it to a grinder for "sharpening".
Any chance you could share how much your friend paid for it? That's always an interesting part of any "garage sale find" story.
I'd be very interested to know the full story of that knife. Like how/when/where did the guy acquire it? What did he use it for? Etc. But that's just my curious nature.
Are you planning on restoring/getting it restored? I'd contact Bill Deshivs and have the handles replaced, as well as a full "spa" treatment.
Congrats, you lucky bastard . Sounds like you've got a good friend.
Thanks for sharing.

I like to keep em as I found em. I would like to know if there is a way to keep the horn from cracking further, around the button its splitting. Any info would be appreciated.

There is a way to stabilize the horn. Whatever you do- DON'T soak the handle in any kind of oil!

Thanks Bill, is that something I can do or does it have to be done by a professional (you)?

Re: Toolbox Latama
It can be done with very thin cyanacrylate glue. I don't recommend trying it yourself. The handle may have to come off to do it-though it's preferable (and cheaper) to do it on the knife.

Great find and not surprised someone could not figure out how to close it, and you could win a bar bet challenging someone to close a picklock or swivel bolster. I once showed a cop how to close a Taiwanese stiletto he had taken from a suspected drug dealer.

this is one sweet old Latama, if you can send, it to Bill so he can stabilize the original horn, good luck.
