Hubertus Tang Stamps and Etchings

Post by jocko952021 »

In error I posted this to the wrong board. Sorry for the duplication.

I would like to learn more about the Hubertus lever lock knife. I found a tang stamp ID chart for Boker that went back 140 years on line. It identified all of the tang stamps and etchings with a year of use range. I would like one for the Hubertus line too. Does anyone have this type of information they could share?

Also, what is the history for nail nicks on Hubertus lever locks? Was the use intermittent? Is it domestic versus export? It seems some newer knives come without them when previous versions had them. I thought once it started it would not stop.

Thanks to all who respond.

Looks like a regular tang stamp to me.

Hope this is a suitable spot to chime in...here's one I'm struggling with finding a match for online:

Looks like someone saw a squirrel and looked the other way while making the Hubertus stamp. That squirrel distraction smeared the wheel of the Titanic above "Hubertus?"

What about this (I think beautiful) file work on this? Does it make a knife more or less desirable? I know the grey etched blade makes it a later date, just wondering about file work in general.

Old post but no replies....The "W" (West Germany) makes the knife more desirable IMO. The file work is the standard file work that Hubertus put on some of their knives. Some collectors like it; Some not as much. Normally, I don't care for file work on some knives...such as Italian Stilettos. This file work that Hubertus used is very basic...not too involved like some you see. It actually makes some Hubertus Knives look more elegant. For example...an 8cm Hubertus (smallest they make) with MOP Scales, the file work makes a knife like that appear more elegant IMO. Perfect for anyone to carry in a Vest Pocket on Sunday. :)

I agree the W ( West ) German knives are better in quality and more desirable. I don't like file work at all. Nice knife all in all....

The stamp/etches don't mention the bolster stamps like this little Liliput, where the blade etch doesn't mention Germany (just Solingen), but has the bolster stamp. I bought it as a 1960's knife, but I really don't know. Anyone?

Any idea of the age of this one? It is marked "Germany", not "W. Germany".

On a side note, I'm sure many Hubertus collectors have noticed the change of time period that the etch looked more like "Hubectus" (as does yours), then got more definition to Hubertus by a clearer separation of the letters as time went on. That would make yours closer to the 1988 rather than the present, though considered same time frame. I'm not sure if there is a definitive answer as to when that etch changed.
