Question on 50's Fish Picklocks
Hi, would a fish picklock from the 1950's with a tang stamp in all caps "MADE IN ITALY" be attributed to Mauro Mario or a different maker? Any help appreciated, thanks!

Re: Question on 50's Fish Picklocks
It could be from early 60's too, really do not know much about 50's picklocks or fish picklocks. It is very high quality compared to a fish I have from the early 90's. It is new old stock.

What's the over all length of this fishtail?

Re: Question on 50's Fish Picklocks
As far as I'm aware, Oreste DiBon produced the 6.25" fishtail picklocks right up until his passing in 2015 I believe. I understand he worked for Mauro Mario back in the day, so maybe he made them back then too(?).

I keep hoping someone else smarter than me will chime in but "my" gut keeps telling me this is one of the modern DiBon knives. The only thing throwing me off is all that I owned, or recall seeing, were just stamped "Italy".
Re: Question on 50's Fish Picklocks
...and, those Oreste DiBon (these, as I know mine is), are very well built little fishtail picklocks. So, it's possibly easy to confuse them as being older, 'cause they're built the old way.whippersnapper wrote: ↑Sat Jul 17, 2021 4:03 am I keep hoping someone else smarter than me will chime in but "my" gut keeps telling me this is one of the modern DiBon knives. Re: Question on 50's Fish Picklocks
I am pretty sure that is an older one (50s or 60s). They newer ones don't have the flat ends on the bolsters (see how the bottom of the top and top of the bottom bolster are curved one the light horn one). Also, that looks like legitimate aging on the backspring. The few vintage Fish I have seen were all larger ones so I think that 6.25" is pretty rare.

Re: Question on 50's Fish Picklocks
Thanks all, this is really good info and the knife does come with provenance of being stored from the 50's. It is new old stock and a rare size from my understanding. I just did not know the maker with the generic stamp. Much appreciated!

Wish we knew more. Maybe somebody else will post more.
I love the fish. Especially the small ones.

When I saw that Made in Italy stamp, which I don't think I have seen before on a vintage Fish, I briefly thought it might be a newer blade on an older handle but the aging on the backspring and blade are clearly the same.

Re: Question on 50's Fish Picklocks
I would dearly love to have a 6.25" OAL Fishtail Picklock in a belt pouch for another carry knife. What a cool personal accouterment!
