*WITH SEER H. PHOTO* Anybody know anything regarding this 9" stiletto?

Post by huckles »

Hi Folks:
The knife is NOT a picklock and seems well made. The Damascus steel appears(feels) real. The tang is marked "Ducator Italy". ADDED A PHOTO OF SEER HOLE.

Thanks
Chuck

It's a picklock.....? It sure appears to have a swivel bolster.

Can you see layers of steel inside the sear hole? Can't really tell from the photos.

Thanks for clarifying on a swivel bolstster. The thing won't budge so I figured picklock. How can I tell so I don't make that error again. Is this a transitional or just some random modern?

in your 1st photo notice the top of the stag, it's angled so the bolster can swing. picklock would be strieght

I’ve never seen that stamp, but I’d guess others have. Looks like a fairly new knife. It’s not a transitional knife. It doesn’t have any of the characteristics of that type of knife. You’ll never see a transitional with a Damascus blade. The stamp appears to been made by a laser. I’m not sure when lasers were first used to stamp a knife, but it wasn’t that long ago.
Nice knife, the stag looks good and I like the Damascus pattern too.

If the bolster will not swivel downward to lever the locking tab upwards ("won't budge") then something is wrong, because the knife was clearly designed to do this. It does not mean the knife is a picklock; it means that it's a malfunctioning swivel bolster knife. I would advise applying your Lubricant Of Choice to the pivot pin, and also try to spray some into any likely cracks and crevices between the bolster and liner. Hopefully you will be able to loosen things up and get it working again.

Looks like layers galore inside the sear hole.... seems to be a sure-'nuff Damascus blade!

If oiling and cleaning the swivel bolster doesn’t work, try slipping one razor blade between the bolster and liner.

The stag handle does seem very close to the bolster and that maybe the issue too....

I'm pretty sure that knife is a Frank b. I would need some pictures of the badges and all in one piece. The knife probably originated with a shiny bayonet blade and was then customized by the old owner. But when he reassembled it he made some gross errors. He wrongly pressed the revolving blade-escutcheon pin, blocking it and probably damaging the escutcheons as well. I give you some advice, with all the calm you have and slowly, insert a fairly large screwdriver between the two escutcheons looking at the back of the spring and begin to push the screwdriver from left to right and vice versa by levering the two ears now of the rotating escutcheon now in the fixed escutcheon. Slowly how to leverage to free the escutcheons that are pressed against the blade. You should be able to free it but I don't know if you will, they may have tightened the pin too tightly.

huckles ~ Forgive me if this post is unnecessary.... in case the term "escutcheon"
is confusing, Mr. Beltrame is referring to what we know as the (front) bolsters.
